You might not give them much thought, but drivers are central to the smooth running of your computer. While it is the operating system and applications that you might interact with directly on a day-to-day basis, every piece of hardware you have installed needs a software driver to make it work.

Just like any other software, it is important to keep drivers up to date. The latest version of any given driver can not only offer better performance and new features and options, but also address security issues and bugs that may have been detected in older versions. You might think that it would be easy to keep drivers up to date, and in some case this is true.

Windows Update can help with the updating of some drivers, but it certainly does not cover everything, and it does not even always offer you the latest version of a driver. Some companies include utilities with their drivers that will periodically check for new versions, but it is impractical to have a huge number of such programs running at all times.

Or, of course, you could manually visit the websites of hardware manufacturers to check for driver updates yourself. This is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task that few people would be happy to undertake. A far better option is to let Avast Driver Updater do the hard work for you.

Working much like Windows Update does for Microsoft's operating system, the tool analyses your computer and notes all of the various hardware components you have attached. The utility can then cross-reference against a database of literally millions of drivers, and let you know if you need to install new versions for any particular device.

It is a simple idea, but a brilliant one, and one that can make a real difference to your computer's stability, performance and security.

Performance Issues?

Most system performance issues are often a result of other software clashing with your brand new software. For instance, security software can clash with a background process, such as a system maintenance tool or defragmentation software. Another cause of system slowdown, is a result of two software applications performing a similar task. As an example, Windows includes a firewall switched on as a default. Your new security suite is likely to include a firewall. You only need one firewall running. In this example, try turning off your system firewall.

Uninstalling Your New Software

Occasionally you may need to either temporarily or permanently remove your new software.

On a Windows computer, go to the Control Panel and choose Programs and Features. Locate the program within the list, then click it to highlight it. Finally, click the Uninstall button at the top of the list and follow the instructions to remove the program from your PC.

On an Apple Mac computer, using Finder, locate the Applications folder. Within the Applications folder, find the name of the application you wish to remove. Simply drag the icon to your Trash icon in your dock. Empty the Trash to remove the files from your computer.

Still Having Problems?

If you cannot solve your system performance issues or are struggling to remove your software, we advise contacting the software manufacturer. If you placed an order, see the section in the order which states Support options. Alternatively, go to the Contact Us page to contact store support directly.

Pros: None
Cons: Doesn't work
It identifies drivers for update, appears to download them, then says it cannot update at the moment and to try later (when it does the same thing). An internet search suggests it could be being interrupted by the security software, which makes it as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Michael, thanks for the order, but why didn't you get in touch or open a support ticket with us? We have direct contact with Avast and can always try and resolve an issue for a customer. A comment shouldn't be the first port of call for an order issue.

You are right, security software will stop people from downloading files from a remote server which will then attempt to update your system. That's what a firewall is designed to do: to stop outside 'intruders' from accessing and updating your system files. Effectively that's what Driver Updater and similar tools are trying to do. You'd have to setup your firewall to 'allow' this function to work correctly.

Avast even offers a tip for this: if you have a firewall enabled on your computer, try disabling it temporarily or adding Driver Updater as an exception or exclusion within its settings.
